How to Get All Day Energy

Have you ever have had a morning like this:

You wake up with a start because the alarm didn’t go off or you have an early meeting. After recovering from hitting your bedroom ceiling, you start your day at a run and grab a cup of coffee. Maybe you think about getting something to eat on the way, but that never happens because the meeting ran late or your son forgot his lunch and you had to go back and get it.Energy Starts Here

We all know that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” but fitting it in your already jam packed morning routine is easier said than done. It’s easy to skip eating altogether or inhale a bowl of cereal so there is something in your stomach, however, cereal and many other common “breakfast foods” may not provide you with the energy you to make it through the day without wanting to take a nap. It’s kind of like putting bad gas in your car or driving around on empty. Either your car doesn’t run smoothly or you run out of gas.

After sleeping all night our bodies are ready for fuel so we can tackle the demands of the day clearly and with focus. For most people eating a combination of carbohydrates and protein is one of the best ways to do that. This keeps your blood sugar at an even, sustained level and will reduce energy slumps and food cravings (think sugar and caffeine), help avoid weight gain and potential disease. I know even from my own experience that when I eat breakfast later than usual, it affects my energy levels during the day.

What  will give you the most energy might take a little experimenting with because everyone is different, but several great ideas are oatmeal (with rolled or steel cut oats, not instant) or eggs (eat the whole egg, not just egg whites). Dress up your oatmeal with nuts, seeds, dried fruit or some spice. Consider making individual egg frittatas by sautéing some veggies and baking them in muffin tins. My favorite breakfast is a green smoothie and soaked steel cut oats.

What are you eating for breakfast? How does it make you feel? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Hi Emi, thanks for your blog. I generally eat rolled oats turned into oatmeal with fruit and it’s great to know I’m on the right track. It feels good to be reassured. I also like your new branding or your new graphics. Everything looks great. Congrats on the teleseminar. Hope you are doing well, Sarah x

You are are on the right track! Consider adding nuts or seeds to boost your protein intake a bit and see if you notice a difference in how you feel. Thank you for the compliments! I am excited about everything I have going on. :) Wishing you much success as well.

While at work, I often enjoy oat bran with chia and flax seeds, cinnamon, banana and some walnuts of pumpkin seeds. Thanks Emi!
